After seeing it on an episode of this old house i immediately went to my local hardware store and bought one.
This isn t the same as having a floor squeak when you step on it which simply indicates that the subfloor isn t tightly fastened to the floor joist in one area.
Floor squeaks are caused by gaps between the sub floor and the floor joists which have separated over time and can be fixed by simply reattaching that sub floor back to the framing.

How do you fix a squeaky subfloor.
1 use a hammer to locate a floor joist within the squeaky section of floor.
Use shims for smaller gaps in subfloor and joists.
Cut a 6 or 8 piece of wire coat.
Slide the shim into the gap.
Fasten the subfloor to the floor.
2 tap the carpeted floor with the hammer and listen for dull thud indicating a joist below.
The squeak ender is a brand of joist support available at most home repair stores for a couple of bucks a metal brace that connects between the joist and the squeaky subfloor.
Peel back carpet and use screw to subfloor.
To install one of these joist subfloor braces screw the mounting plate to the underside of the subfloor directly under the squeaking spot.
Locate squeak in floor and drive nail into joist.
Whenever you hear one watch for movement between the subfloor and the joist in.
If you can feel a soft spot in the floor under the carpet the subfloor has likely been weakened or damaged.
The trick however is to not damage your wall to wall carpet and to locate where the joists in your floor are located.
